Port Arthur woman expecting quadruplets
A Port Arthur family is preparing to welcome not one, not two, not three, but four newborns. Lafleshe Broussard is expecting quadruplets in December and no, she was not taking fertility drugs.
The odds of that happening... more than one in a half million.
Seeing these four faces on a screen was the last thing Lafleshe Broussard ever thought she would see when she went to a Seattle, Washington hospital in June with what she thought was the H1N1 flu.
Broussard said, "She was like, 'So do you have a history of having multiples in your family?' and I was like 'Multiple what?' and she said, 'Multiple babies,' and I said, 'At once??'"
Broussard was pregnant with quadruplets... without any assistance from fertility drugs.
"It's a true blessing, I'm just overwhelmed," she said.
The news sent Broussard back to Southeast Texas where her family and boyfriend live. She says the past six-and-a-half months have been beyond comprehension.
"It's a lot to think about and a lot to prepare for all while still trying to make sure my seven year old son is still okay," she said.
Broussard has been unable to work due to the pregnancy, and unable to move her belongings from Seattle because of the price tag. The cost has also been the problem when it comes to baby necessities.
"We're talking $100-$150 car seats, times four, and double strollers at @250, times 2... you're going.. okay," she said, "Not being financially where I want to be or need to be, trying to be prepared for these children has been very difficult."
But family from both sides have been a big support. Her family has found a home for Broussard and the babies to lease, while the father's family held a baby shower for Broussard this past weekend.
But they're not enough. And with three months left and the babies already weighing a total of eight pounds, Broussard is relying on family and faith to make it to the delivery... and beyond.
She said, "It's a lot to take in, a lot to think about consistently and a lot to deal with, but I'm trying to stay strong."
Broussard is expecting two identical boys and two identical girls. She says she'll be placed on bed rest at a hospital in Galveston in the middle of next month. Hospital staff is planning to deliver the babies by C-section in December.
