Deweyville's Scholar Athletes - March 17, 2008
In most cases when you see a high school literature class reading Hamlet, the word tragic would come to mind.
But inside Mrs. Williams' class at Deweyville High School lies a bright spot in Newton County's community, Krista Goleman, one of this week's scholar athletes.
"I went on a mission trip in the summer right before school and my church group helped take care of sick kids," said Goleman.
Across the school, we joined a criminal justice session where our other recipient, Matthew Manning was sitting front and center.
"I like to think I'm one of the most respected, better guys in the school," he said.
Krista's has a certain future mapped out. She wants to attend Emory University and become a nurse practitioner.
As for Matthew, he wants to pursue a college degree while playing some baseball and eventually become a game warden.
Matthew has led the Pirates to a 3-0 district start, keeping pace with front-runner Buna.
His accomplishments on the field are highlighted by a grand slam he hit against Evadale.
Krista was captain of the basketball team and says he biggest athletic accomplishment last season may have been when she was selected as a member of the first team all Orange-Leader for girls basketball in the area.
Krista also participates in various academic and spirit clubs at Deweyville.
Matthew said he'd like to thank his mom for pushing him every day to complete his school work and try his best.
Both students agreed that Mrs. Williams AP Literature class was great and that she was an excellent teacher.
Next week, KFDM will visit Central High School.
