West Orange-Stark's Scholar Athletes
Chase Adams is not a TV star, but an area playoff game last fall did make him a YouTube legend.
The Mustangs defeated state title favorite Giddings in Pearland, Texas the Friday after Thanksgiving.
Perhaps Chase's biggest hit of the season came when ran over one of our own KFDM reporters while his team was taking the field.
Cheerleader and the other scholar athlete recipient this week, Lauryn Windham, couldn't believe it at the time.
"I don't know why he would run over a reporter like that," said Windham.
"I just want to apologize to him and tell him I'm sorry for that," said Adams.
His apology was of course accepted.
Chase plans on attending the University of Texas-Arlington next fall where he's going to try and walk on to the baseball team.
"My ultimate goal is to end up becoming a doctor so I can start my own practice. There's a shortage in the nursing field and medical field here, so hopefully I can come back and help," he said.
Lauryn was a senior captain on the most successful softball team in Mustang history.
"Just having your school respect you in that way. We've never really had that respect. Softball has really progressed over the last few years so this year our school has really respected us," said Windham.
This future Aggie expressed how she's always had her priorities straight.
"My parents definitely pushed me all four years and before that to work really hard and go beyond what I'm expected to do," she said.
Chase too knows the importance of higher education.
"I think that it's important that you take school seriously. You know sports won't last forever because of injuries and stuff, so as long as you have your education you can go as far as you want to go," he said.
Lauryn is has one last message for her school before she graduates.
She said, "To me, school is more than just going from eight until three and then going home. Staying after school is when you earn your best memories. Definitely get involved. If it's not in sports, then in something else."
Congratulations to these great area scholar athletes. Come back next week for our latest report.
