July 25 Restaurant Report Card

This week's restaurant inspection scores come to us from the Hardin County Health Department.

A well known Mexican restaurant in Lumberton is making headlines this week for problems that left it on the lower end of the grading scale.

#1. El JALAPENO MEXICAN RESTAURANT 104 SOUTH MERCHANT SOUR LAKE/GRADE=77

We begin with El Jalapeno Mexican Restaurant on South Merchant in Sour Lake. Inspector Kellum found employees were not washing rinsing and sanitizing dishes and utinsils properly. Roach spray was near the area where food was being prepared.. And hamburger meat was being thawed improperly. El Jalapeno Mexican Restaurant gets a 77.

#2. SOUTHERN MAID DONUTS 690 SOUTH MAIN LUMBERTON/GRADE=85

Now to Southern Maid Donuts on South Main in Lumberton. Inspector Kellum says the restaurant needs a new cloth on the kolache table. The hand wash area needs a sign about the proper way to wash hands and employees need to take the temperature of kolaches before serving them to make sure they are safe. Southern Maid Donuts gets an 85.

#3. DEE BEST DONUTS 314 LHS DR. LUMBERTON/GRADE=87

Next is Dee Best Donuts in Lumberton. Inspector Kellum found employees needed to wash hands more often and food that has been prepared in advance must have dates on it to ensure it is fresh when it is served. Dee Best Donuts gets an 87.

#4. CATFISH CABIN TOO 922 SOUTH LHS DR. LUMBERTON/GRADE=97

Now to Catfish Cabin Too in Lumberton. The restaurant did very well on its inspection. In fact all the inspector suggested was that employees test the sanitizer used to clean dishes to make sure it is doing the job it was intended to do. Catfish Cabin Too is close to perfect with a 97.
