Liquor store shootout
A liquor store owner in Port Arthur exchanged gunfire with two men he says tried to rob him and threatened his family.
The men got away and the owner of Antonio's Liquor on Joe Louis Avenue wasn't hurt in the shootout at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday
Antonio Figueroa was working in the back room of his store when he heard two men yelling at his wife to give them the money. He says as he made his way to the front of the store he heard one of the men cock a shotgun.
"He says he saw them with a rifle and got scared for my grandmother and started shooting at them."
Antonio's granddaughter, Cheila, translates for Antonio. He said he began exchanging gunfire with them.
"They shot out the windows and they put a shot hole in the window and they were just saying 'give me the money, give me the money.'"
The robbers ran out of the store and fired one last round through a glass window before taking off in a car parked down the street.
Antonio has owned the liquor store for 18 years. He says this isn't the first time his store has been robbed but it is the first time he's exchanged gunfire with a robber.
"He was happy he had his gun on him because most of the time he leaves it in the front or he leaves it in his truck."
Antonio says when he pulled his pistol out his only thought was his wife.
"No, he didn't get scared. He was more scared for my grandmother than he was for himself. He was just happy she was okay."
Port Arthur Police say no one was injured in the shooting.
Antonio says he doesn't consider himself a hero-just a good husband.
"He said that his wife, he loves her very much. 53 years. They've been together for a very long time."
Antonio says he was able to stop the robbers from stealing anything from the store.
Police are looking for the gunmen.
