Medical helicopter transports burn victim

A 79-year-old burn victim has been taken by medical helicopter to a hospital, according to information a Beaumont Fire Department dispatcher provided to KFDM News.

The victim was burned in a house fire at about 12:45 p.m. Friday in the 45 hundred block of Beaumont Drive.

The fire is out.

Capt. Brad Penisson with the Beaumont Fire Department told KFDM News the 79-year-old homeowner was investigating a gas leak near the central air conditioning unit and a spark caused the gas to ignite.

The man received first and second degree burns to his face and chest.  He was taken by medical helicopter to UTMB in Galveston.

Doctors said his injuries aren't life threatening and he should be okay.

A family friend told KFDM News several people warned the homeowner about a strong gas odor and told him to get out.
