Fatal accident in Sabine County

A 78 year old man was killed on Thursday evening when the Chevrolet sedan he was driving collided with a Chrysler sedan on Highway 96 South near Spur 414, south of Pineland, in Sabine County. The accident occurred shortly before 10:00.
Samuel Lee Powell, 78, of Pineland, was pronounced dead at the scene by Sabine County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Jamie Brasher. The driver of the Chrysler, 42 year old Doris Brown Cooper, also of Pineland, and her young daughter were injured in the crash and taken to a local hospital where they were at last word still undergoing treatment.
Fireman from both the Pineland and Lake Rayburn Fire Departments were called to the scene to assist with rescuing the victims from the vehicle and to stand by in case of fire.
The accident was investigated by state trooper Tommy Scales.
