WASHINGTON (AP) - The Coast Guard says it will look into exactly how its training exercise on the Potomac River today led to TV news reports indicating that the Coast Guard had fired on a suspicious vessel, not far from the Pentagon. The reports were apparently based on overheard radio communications that were part of the exercise. CNN reported that 10 rounds had been fired.

BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan (AP) - Among those who've paused to mark the eighth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attack are U.S. service members who enlisted in the aftermath of the attack, and who are now serving in Afghanistan. Many troops said marking today's anniversary helps remind them of the importance of the U.S. mission there.

WASHINGTON (AP) - There's more pressure on President Barack Obama today to resist escalating the war in Afghanistan. The chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Carl Levin of Michigan, says instead of sending in more Americans, the U.S. should train more Afghan security forces.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) - Bad weather in Florida has stalled space shuttle Discovery's landing once more. Mission Control decided this afternoon to skip the day's first landing attempt and shoot for a nighttime return instead. If conditions remain poor at the shuttle's home port, Discovery and its crew of seven will go to Edwards Air Force Base in California.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Health officials say influenza is circulating unusually early this year with cases in every state - and nearly all the infections are swine flu. The highest concentrations of flu cases are in the Southeast and a few other states. But health officials also report that the vaccines against swine flu apparently work with a single dose, and work quickly.
