From Lamar University -

Lamar University will join the Beaumont Foundation of America Thursday, Dec. 3 to announce the 14th in a series of Southeast Texas Legends Scholarships benefiting Lamar students.

The foundation's $100,000 gift to the university will honor Beaumont attorney Gilbert I. "Buddy" Low, whose distinguished legal career includes more than three decades serving Southeast Texas as a plaintiff attorney and defense attorney. Low is a partner at Orgain, Bell & Tucker law firm of Beaumont.

A ceremony and news conference will begin at 12:45 p.m. in the Spindletop Room of the University Reception Center, on the eighth floor of the Mary and John Gray Library. The Legends scholarships are designed to help under-served individuals pursue higher education.

President James Simmons will announce the Southeast Texas Legends-Gilbert I. "Buddy" Low Scholarship, joined by representatives of the Beaumont Foundation of America.

Buddy Low was born in tiny Geneva, Texas where he grew up in a house with no running water or electricity. His earliest education was in a two-room country schoolhouse. From these modest beginnings, Low became one of the most prominent attorneys in Texas representing such notable clients as T. Boone Pickens, Warren Buffet and General Motors Corp.

The honoree was chairman of the Texas Supreme Court Professional Ethics Committee for more than 25 years and is currently vice-chairman of the Texas Supreme Court Advisory Committee. He is a former president of the Jefferson County Bar Association and is a fellow of the International Society of Barristers, the International Academy of Trial Lawyers and the American Board of Trial Advocates. In 1999, Texas Lawyer magazine named him the Best Plaintiff's Lawyer as well as Best Defense Lawyer in Beaumont. He has been selected as a Texas Super Lawyer each year from 2003-2009 by Super Lawyer magazine.
