Southeast Texans Recognize Kamisha Block

The military has flown the body of Army Specialist Kamisha Block back to southeast Texas.

The 20 year old from Vidor is the first woman from Southeast Texas to be killed in Iraq. She died last Thursday in what the department of defense is calling a non combat-related incident.

Tuesday, hundreds of people lined main street in Vidor to show their support for Spc. Block and her family.

Family members and supporters watched as an airplane carrying the body of Spc. Block touched down at the Southeast Texas Regional Airport.

There was only silence as police officers saluted Spc. Block and the military escorted her body to the hearse.

“The least we can do is stand beside the family and salute her as she goes by,” said supporter David Humberson.

He was among hundreds of people who lined up along Main Street in Vidor to show their gratitude. Many took off from work.

Humberson brought his crew to honor Block, while businesses along the procession route offered their blessings and lowered their flags.

Veterans from American Legion Post 112 said they wanted to show their appreciation to the families of fallen soldiers.

“We do this to honor the dead, encourage the living and let the world know we are thankful of these veterans,” said James Taylor.

Many came with flags. Some carried their pride close to their heart. Among the observers was Kandie Singleton, who knew block from school. She brought her daughter because she says one day she wants her to better understand the importance of freedom.

“I would like for them to know what the people do in the Army and let them know that they do fight for us,” said Singleton.

Specialist Block's escort included dozens of city, county, and personal vehicles, and the ever-present Patriot Guard which tries to attend each soldier's procession and funeral.

Onlookers stood with their hands over their hearts thanking Block for her service and reflecting on her mission.

“I guess you could consider her popular. I'm just glad everyone's out here to celebrate,” said Singleton.

Humberton added, “There's no words to explain what I can say anymore than just we're going to keep y'all in our prayers and the Lord bless you.”

The wake is Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Eastgate United Pentecostal Church off I-10 in Vidor. Block’s funeral is Thursday at 10 a.m., also at the church.
