Grand jury meeting cancelled in cheerleader case

The Hardin County grand jury won't be hearing a case as scheduled Thursday involving a cheerleader who says she was sexually assaulted.

Three Silsbee High School football players, including one juvenile, were charged with sexually assaulting the girl during a party in October, 2008. In January a previous grand jury decided not to indict them.

In June, District Attorney David Sheffield told KFDM the grand jury empaneled for this session reported to Judge Britt Plunk its desire to re-investigate the case and call witnesses.

Sheffield recused himself because he is a party to a civil lawsuit filed by the parents of the cheerleader. A judge appointed Beaumont attorney David Barlow special prosecutor in the case. Barlow told KFDM News the panel was scheduled to meet Thursday but won't because the investigation isn't complete.
