Man Gets Probation in Connection With Case Involving Cat Beating
Comments 0 | Recommend 0A judge has sentenced a man to one year probation on a charge of criminal mischief for beating a cat with a shovel.
Judge Layne Walker sentenced Lee Randall French, Junior, 20, of Beaumont to the misdemeanor charge of criminal mischief. The judge said there wasn't sufficient evidence to find French guilty of a felony.
French had pleaded no contest to a charge of animal cruelty and could have received up to two years in a state jail.
Prosecutors say the cat was beaten with a shovel on January 17, 2005 in a drainage ditch in west Beaumont.
French alleges the cat was dead when it was beaten with a shovel.
Prosecutors say animal control officers disposed of the cat, making it difficult to prove their case.
Witnesses allege they saw and heard the beating.
Two other teens accused of the crime have completed probation.
Jessica Holloway covered today's sentencing.
