Shorkey Center In Need Of Help
A non-profit organization that's given years of service to Southeast Texans now needs support from the community. The Shorkey Center has been around for more than 60 years. It's a non-profit organization that helps children with special needs; children like 18 month old Lillian Claybar. She's been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and the Shorkey Center is teaching her to walk for the first time. Representatives from the center say Hurricane Humberto caused ten thousand dollars in damage to the building. When the center shut down during Hurricane Ike it lost an additional $70,000.
"We're a non-profit. Any disaster that hits us hits double whammy because we don't have backup resources," said Mary Wickland.
"$150,000 would really be nice. $100,000 is really what we're working towards right now," said Gail Showalter.
A benefit dinner for the Shorkey Center is scheduled for Tuesday, November 11th. Staff members say you can also donate to the center by sending a check.
