Indicted Orangefield teacher resigns
An Orangefield Junior High teacher indicted for her relationship with student has turned in her letter of resignation.
39 year old Jennifer Lea Burton was indicted last week on three charges of sexual assault and three charges of improper relationship between educator and student.
The charges stem from an alleged relationship between Burton and an Orangefield Junior High student.
The indictment alleges the incident occurred from September to November of 2008.
Burton was a teacher and coach at the junior high school.
The school district has cancelled a special meeting this evening to discuss her future with the district.
"The letter of resignation will enable Orangefield ISD to move forward and attempt to put this unfortunate incident behind us," said Superintendent Philip Welch. "Every measure will continue to be taken to assure that students are educated in a safe and secure school environment."
If convicted, Burton could face a punishment ranging from probation to 20 years in prison for each of the six charges.
