Berry Set to Appear in Court for Leaving Newborn in Ant-Filled Ditch

KFDM News has learned a woman convicted of killing her newborn son and leaving him in a dumpster in 1998 is scheduled to go to court on a charge of leaving her newborn girl in a ditch filled with ants in 2003.

Kenisha Berry was sentenced to death for killing her newborn son nearly a decade ago, but in late September a court threw out the death penalty. Berry is now serving a life sentence.

She's scheduled to go to court Tuesday on a charge of abandoning her newborn daughter in a ditch.

The baby was found by a man while he was taking a walk down Hillebrandt Road in June of 2003.

The newborn girl, Parris Berry, suffered hundreds of ant bites. She was hospitalized for treatment of the bites.

Her mother, Kenisha, was indicted on a charge of child abandonment.

The District Attorney's Office tells KFDM News she's scheduled to be brought to Judge Layne Walker's court on a bench warrant from the state prison where she's serving her life sentence.

Jefferson County District Attorney Tom Maness says if Berry wants to enter a plea his office will consider it. She faces up to 20 years in prison on the charge of child abandonment.

Maness says he will not dismiss the case. If a plea can't be worked out, prosecutors will take the case to trial.
