Family of Iraq war veteran questions jail death

DALLAS (AP) - The family of an Iraq war veteran wants to know why he ended up dead after being subdued with pepper spray by guards in a Dallas County jail complex.

Autopsy results are pending on 32-year-old Gregory Kitchen, who died in January.

The Dallas Morning News reported Friday that relatives of another man, who died in June 2008, are also questioning guard restraint methods and have sued. Corey Bailey was 31.

A report indicates Bailey, held on a drunken-driving charge, died while guards were moving him for a mental health evaluation. The autopsy report says Bailey died of toxic effects of the drug PCP, including excited delirium, in combination with "restraint by police officers."

Army Sgt. Denise Kitchen awaits results of her husband's autopsy. He was jailed on a felony burglary charge.

A sheriff's department spokeswoman declined comment.

I hope they find the cause of this guys death, but why does the story get sensationalized by titling it “ Family of Iraq war veteran questions death?” He was charged with burglary so why would the story not read, “Family of man charged with BURGLARY questions death?”

Him being and Iraq war veteran has noting to do with this story and only makes it appear that he should be held in a superior light because he was a war veteran. Just reading the title, one automaticly assumes that we are talking about a a decent person that was probably only in jail for a minor offense. I was quite shocked when I finished reading the article and found out that he was charged with burglary. The title is why I had such preconceived ideas of what this Iraq war veteran would have been charged with.

KFDM sites this story form the dallasnews.com website. Interestingly they didn't sensationalize their title. Below is the title to the story as reported form the Dallas News, and an excerpt of Inmate Kitchens story. Seems like KFDM is who like to sensationalize everything.

“Families seek answers in deaths of inmates subdued at Dallas County jails”

Kitchen was in jail on a felony burglary charge. A veteran who served in Iraq, he was taken to a nurse the night before his death after banging his head on the wall of his cell, sheriff's reports show. Kitchen lunged at a nurse and groped her before officers pulled him off, reports said The next day, officers entered his cell to subdue him. Kitchen, who was fighting back, was sprayed with pepper spray twice and placed in handcuffs and leg irons. A sergeant then noticed that Kitchen "looked unresponsive" and appeared to lose consciousness.

Denise Kitchen said there's no reason her husband should have died after being restrained. She said he had a "psychotic break" and needed help.

So it's not his fault thathe fought the guards, grooped the nurse and was banging his head on the wall? So who fault is it? Oh wait the guards fault becasue Mr. Kitchens was having a "psychotic break."

Leave it to Scott to change something or misspell, misquote, or take something out of context.
The guy being an Iraj veteran has nothing to do with it other than to make all the good ones look bad.
The cops don't spray anyone unless they have to, so Kitchens shouldn't have been resisting the officers. Good lord, how are our police officers supposed to do their jobs if the whiney public want to turn around and always oaccuse them of mot being professional.

All I can say is dont fight the police and you dont have to worry about ending up like this. These people bring it upon themselves. Then you got these screaming liberals blaming the police departments. What a crock of crap. People need to take responsibility for their own actions. If you break the law then expect to pay the consequences. If you try to fight the police then expect them to defend themselves and put your a$$ in jail one way or the other. I say good job Dallas Sheriffs Department and keep up the good work. Thats 2 less thugs that the law abiding citizens doesnt have to put up with.
