FCC readies Southeast Texas for digital conversion

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

In less than a month analog signals will go off the air and millions of American's will be faced with finding a digital signal for their favorite programming and news.

Today one of the Federal Communications Commissioners came to Beaumont to talk about digital television.

Robert McDowell spoke to general managers of TV and radio stations in Southeast Texas about easing the pain that might be caused by the switch to digital transmission.

But even with guidance, there will be some who may not get a signal when the switch happens June 12th.

The Federal Communications Commission is sending representatives across the country, trying to ensure everyone's ready for the switch to digital TV.

"Get consumers educated about conversion. Folks need to understand most broadcasters are broadcasting in digital today. And get ready today. Don't wait until June 12th," says Robert McDowell, a Commissioner with the Federal Communications Commission.

Millions of TV viewers have already bought digital converter boxes. But for those who haven't, the signal could fade to black when broadcasters flip the switch June 12th.

And for those in outlying areas, like Jasper, Newton and Tyler counties, there could be problems receiving a signal. But that's something the FCC vows to fix once the transition occurs.

"Only after digital transition will we know exactly where the holes are. Some broadcasters will be broadcasting with more power as a result, others with less power," says McDowell.

McDowell says the transition will create more opportunities for broadcasters and other service providers to come in and compete with existing cable businesses.

"We're auctioning off a lot of old TV space that will be able to serve as a result of DTV transition. And new video players can enter the market as soon as can build out. It's a matter of when the capital markets improve," says McDowell.

McDowell says the new changes may seem vast, but they will mean new wireless technology, and better clarity, when viewers are watching their favorite programs in the coming months.

If you still need more information about the switch to digital or want to apply for a coupon for a digital converter box, you can call 1-888-DTV-2009.

But if you're looking for a coupon, it can take about 10 days to process that order and send it back to you.
