Rising water prompts VISD to cancel classes
Comments 0 | Recommend 0The rainwater piled up outside Vidor High School and even seeped into some campuses, prompting the district to release students early.
The water sat in the street near Vidor High School, as parents sat in their cars, waiting for the district to release students and send them home.
"Doesn't look too bad to me. I dropped her off this morning and I remember a couple times we couldn't even drive. We had to sit and wait for the water to go down a little bit," says Matt McGlaughlin, a parent.
"This is just something we have to deal with in Vidor, I mean it's been like this. I graduated in '81 and it was like this before that," says Mark Guidry who was waiting to pick up his son.
The rising water and saturated ground created problems inside the high school and middle school. The water began backing up, prompting the district to take action.
"The water is non-drinkable and not very clean so we want to make sure students and staff are safe and we don't introduce something into the environment that would cause somebody to be sick," says Dr. Joe Burns, Superintendent for VISD.
Vidor ISD lined up transportation, called parents to pick up students and closed schools for the day.
"We were waiting in line this morning and I said we could go the other way and drop off at the other side, but you'd have to wade across. He said, 'no, we'll just wait,' says Guidry.
And while the water began receding by the time students were released, some students still had to jump puddles, and take off their shoes to get to higher ground.
"Take all precautions we think are prudent to make sure we get the kids home safely," says Dr. Burns.
"Anytime they can get our excused, I'm sure they enjoy it," says McGlaughlin.
Enjoy getting out of school, but not the wet weather.
The superintendent says workers will clean up the schools before students return Monday.
