Trustee says conditions at field house not even fit for deer camp

BEAUMONT- by Bill Leger-

2 Beaumont school board members have differing opinions when it comes to the condition of the West Brook High School Field House, which remains under construction.

Trustee Tom Neild says conditions inside the unfinished field house aren't fit for a deer camp, much less for use by school students.

Neild says so far about $1.6 million dollars has been spent on the field house, which is budgeted for about $2 million.  The district says work is continuing and should be complete in about 2 months.

Neild says even though the unfinished building is open to students while construction continues, in his opinion, it's unsanitary and unsafe.

Neild visited the facility Wednesday after hearing complaints from parents and supporters of the school's athletic program.

Pictures from inside provided to KFDM show toilet paper rolls hanging from rope or shoelaces in the rest room stalls or sitting on the floor.

Neild said water was coming into the building and the flooring was uneven and could easily cause students to fall.

He said there was an electrical wire with electrical tape hanging from the roof and near metal.

However, Trustee Zenobia Bush who heads the district's Building and Grounds Committee says she believes the complaints by some are making a mountain out of a molehill.

Bush said all of the district's new buildings have had to have some work completed after they were opened.

Bush said she was told city inspectors had been out to the field house twice Wednesday and the building is approved for use by students.

The trustee said any problems that exist could easily be corrected, such as picking up the toilet paper off of the floor.

Neild said he encourages parents of West Brook students to see the conditions for themselves and then voice their opinions at the next Beaumont School Board meeting set for Thursday September 20, 2012.
