Teen prevents house fire from spreading

Beaumont fire investigators say a cigarette is to blame for an accidental house fire. The fire broke out around eleven Monday morning in the 1300 block of Harrison Street in Beaumont.

Firefighters say when they arrived most of the fire was already out because residents sprayed the fire with a water hose. Investigators believe a cigarette fell between the wooden steps on the backside of the home and caused the steps and a side wall to catch fire. A teenager living in the house says he saw smoke coming into his room and took action.

"I panicked but I also thought I had to do what I had to do," said Jason Sanchez.

"With these 90 degree weathers and our bunker gear it's easy in this heat even for a healthy person to get get down," said Charlie Cox.

Ten people live in the home. No one was hurt in the fire.
