Gassing up for Gustav

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

As Gustav moves towards the Gulf of Mexico many people are gassing up and preparing just in case.

The price of gas has gone up at many gas stations across the Golden Triangle.

When truckers like William Brakebill pull into the Flying J Truck Stop in Orange, they aren't always thinking about the weather.

"You don't drive in weather conditions like that, or I wouldn't anyway," says Truck Driver William Brakebill.

Now Brakebill is having to consider how tropical storm Gustav could affect his route.

"Normally I go from Lake Charles to Port Arthur then to Oklahoma. Be back to Lake Charles Friday, dunno how it'll affect me then," says Brakebill.

Dozens of drivers rushed in to get gas at cheaper prices and fill up cans and barrels, just to be ready.

"We're just making sure in case we have to go, we'll carry what we have in case there's no gas along the way," says C. Ray McCurly.

The McCurly's brought a bed full of gas cans, all the way from Buna.

They'll have about 35 gallons on hand, and they're topping off all their vehicles to make sure they're not running on fumes.

"The finances for people are bad enough. So, anytime you can get it cheaper, that's the time to get it," says McCurly.

"Diesel has come down some, maybe it won't go back up too bad," says Brakebill.

Although the cost of regular gasoline increased to $3.43 a gallon, there were still plenty of people ready to pay the price at the pump, and fill up before the numbers increase again.

Some station owners believe the price of gas will continue to rise as Gustav makes its way into the Gulf.
