Leger's Restaurant Report Card

This week the Restaurant Report is on the road to Orange County. The county's environmental health department is responsible for checking out the safety of restaurants in all of the cities in the county. Here are the highs and lows in this Orange County edition of Leger's Restaurant Report Card.

MAZZIO'S PIZZA 3108 EDGAR BROWN/ORANGE GRADE=56 (re-inspection grade=100)

We begin with Mazzio's Pizza on Edgar Brown in Orange. Inspector Lee found enough problems to fill up three pages. ham, ham slices chicken and pizzas were at unsafe temperatures. Employees were not wearing proper hair restraints, there were gnats in the kitchen and storage areas. For those problems and others Mazzio's received a failing grade of 56 and was given several days to correct the problems... to their credit.. they did a complete turn around and scored a perfect grade of 100.

SENOR TORO'S 1298 N. Main Vidor GRADE=54 (re-inspection grade=93)

Next is Senor Toro's on North Main in Vidor. Inspector Lee found shrimp left out thawing on a table which is a violation, steak , cheese and other food items were at unsafe temperatures. There were flies in the kitchen. Pots were not being sanitized and there was no hot water for employees to properly wash hands. Senor Toro's gets a failing grade of 54. Several days later Inspector Lee returned and almost all of the problems had been corrected.. Senor Toro's improved its grade to a 93.

JV'S SEAFOOD 10th St. & Park Ave. in ORANGE GRADE=68 (RE-INPSECTION Grade=97)

Now to JV's Seafood on West Park in Orange. Inspector Lee found eggs and chicken wings at unsafe temperatures, employees without hair restraints, and gnats in the kitchen. JV's Seafood gets a 68. However, the restaurant was reinspected a few days later and had corrected most of the problems. Owner Karen Nguyen says she wants everyone to know her seafood is good and safe to eat.

HOT STUFF PIZZA McLewis GRADE=79

And finally we stop at Hot Stuff Pizza in McLewis. Inspector English found food at unsafe temperatures, a worker needed a hair restraint, and dishes were not being sanitized. Hot Stuff Pizza in McLewis wound up with a 79.
