Frat brothers explain how they fought robbers with BB guns

The 2 suspects accused of breaking into the Kappa Sigma Fraternity house at Lamar had all the tools of the trade: bandanas, panty hose and guns. The only problem, they were BB guns.

Beaumont police say at about 9 p.m. Monday the suspects broke into the frat house in the 500 block of East Pipkin.

Three men at the house overpowered the robbers after realizing the guns fired BB's, not bullets.

Joe Jefferson explains how 2 men wearing bandanas and carrying guns got into the Kappa Sigma house Monday night.

"Just got off work last night, came home and was upstairs.  Just winding down from the day," says Vice President of Kappa Sigma at Lamar, Joe Jefferson.

Then he heard noises upstairs near his room. Another fraternity member found the two trying to steal electronics.

"Had a gun to his temple and tried to walk him downstairs," says Jefferson.

That's when a fight broke out.

"He was calling 'Joe, Joe, Joe.'  So I ran downstairs and still just seeing- it's pitch black and I'm seeing bits and pieces of everything.  He says, 'hold on, it's just a BB gun.'" says Jefferson.

Jefferson came downstairs and found himself staring down the barrel of a BB gun.

He says the suspect tried to run out of the back door, but found no way to escape.

"At that point my adrenaline started rushing.  That part is a little bit of a blur, don't know exactly what I was thinking," says Jefferson.

Jefferson and his fraternity members thought and acted quickly enough to stop the would-be robbers and call police.

"We kept them in the house, they didn't move a muscle until police showed up, they weren't going to," says Jefferson.

After the Kappa Sigma brothers teamed up, and took the situation into their own hands.

20-year-old Kevin Matthew Citizen and 23-year-old Phillip Michael Thomas were charged with aggravated robbery and held on a $50,000 bonds.

Thomas was also charged with failure to comply with sex offender registration.
