Jefferson County Commissioners have what they call two "arge pots of government money for hurricane recovery and they're trying to figure out the best way to spend it. Commissioners say Jefferson County is receiving $800,000 from the governor's disaster relief fund and $29 million from the Office of Rural Community Affairs. In a workshop county leaders outlined a list of priorities.
The list includes the Cheek Volunteer Fire Department, a water line in West Jefferson County, drainage improvements for DD7, repairs to the Labelle-Fannett Fire Department and the Sabine Pass Port Authority.
Commissioners are putting together a formal list of priorities this week. Commissioner Mark Domingue says all of the money from the governor's relief fund must be used for hurricane related improvements. However, the money from the office of community affairs can be used for other things.
Commissioners plan to file grant applications before Thursday of next week.
