Sabine Pass recovering from Ike, preparing for new hurricane season
Today marks the beginning of a new season, hurricane season.
Many along the upper Texas coast are rebuilding from last season, and hurricane Ike.
Some families in Sabine Pass say they're as ready as they can be.
Carl Snider has more on his mind than the start of hurricane season, he's watching his grandkids enjoy the start of their summer vacation.
But he knows the pain one storm can cause a community.
"We went through Rita and that was bad. But Ike was a lot worse," says Carl Snider.
Snider says he was lucky, his house was one of 5 in Sabine Pass that didn't take on water during hurricane Ike.
But there is still damage on many streets.
"We're tough though, this little town's been around a long time. This is a good community," says Snider.
Fast forward from last September to this June, and there's still no gas station in Sabine Pass. But other businesses have re-opened, including 2 restaurants.
"If a storm comes in the Gulf, we just hook up and go. When it's over, we come back," says Tammie Blood.
Tammie Blood owns Tammie's Dinner on Gulfway Drive, she can leave any time she wants to, because her kitchen is on wheels.
"Things will be done until probably 2015. So, hopefully we don't get one at least until everyone's elevated and out of tents and trailers," says Blood.
And she's hoping the construction on her home, and many others, is done before Sabine Pass is in the sights of another hurricane.
"We hope that we're ready for it. And we're as ready as we can be," says Snider.
Ready to see what lies ahead, and hoping this season doesn't bring down any more homes.
It's a good idea to have an evacuation plan ready, and supplies your family might need during hurricane season.
