Body Found in Neches Identified; No Foul Play Suspected

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has identified the body found on the Neches River as James Marion Winfrey IV DOB: 9/5/1985, 22 year old.
At this point in the death investigation the cause of death at this time does not appear to be criminal in nature. An autopsy was performed which show no signs of trauma to the body. We are waiting for toxicology results and until then we will continue this investigation. The family of the deceased has been notified and Mr. Winfrey did live in the Jefferson County area.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Investigating Death of MALE Subject Found Deceased in Neches River
On January 9th, 2008 at approximately 1100 a.m., Sheriff Patrol Deputies were dispatched to the Neches River area near the Bridge between Beaumont and Rose City in Jefferson County in reference to a deceased person in the Neches River. The patrol deputies arrived at the location and discovered a body. It appears the victim is a male subject. The body was discovered by company personnel near the location.
Sheriff Detectives were dispatched to the scene for further investigation.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division are investigating this as a death investigation. The victim has not been identified. Once on the scene, Detectives began to investigate. An autopsy was ordered by Judge Dollinger to determine cause of death. The investigation continues.
We have sent the fingerprints of the victim to the State Automated Fingerprint Identification System. This system, known as AFIS, allows us to search a database of individuals presently in the Texas Department of Public Safety fingerprint files and compare unknown latent fingerprints. We are also sending prints to the Federal System with the FBI. The investigation is continuing.
At this point in the investigation, we will not be releasing the cause of death until the victim has been identified.
