MEXICO CITY (AP) - The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Marco is hitting land north of Mexico's Veracruz port on the Gulf coast.

The storm was moving inland at near 8 mph (13 kph.) It dumped up to 4 inches (10 centimeters) of rain and had maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (100 kph).

Marco roared ashore early Tuesday about 55 miles (90 kilometers) north of Veracruz. It is expected to dissipate later today as it moves over mountains inland.

It was a compact storm, with tropical storm force winds extending only 15 miles (30 kilometers from the center.
