Neighbors fight fire with garden hose
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Investigators say they have evidence teenagers might be responsible for setting a fire on Carla Street off Highway 105 in Vidor.
Although the trailer burned to the ground, authorities are thanking two neighbors for getting involved and trying to help.
Clint Yeary and Buck Percey were not only witnesses to the fire that destroyed this travel trailer.
"Out getting sodas and came back, saw smoke coming from the camper trailer," says Buck Percey.
"Neighbors living in the area actually were the first to find the fire and started attacking it," says Orange County Emergency Services District 1 Chief Jerry Aldridge.
They were the neighbors that tried to keep the flames under control until firefighters arrived.
The 2 men ran the garden hose through the house, leaned out of a side window and opened a door and sprayed water on the flames to prevent them from spreading.
"It was hot and smoke was choking. But, go in and get what we can, come out and get fresh air, go back and do some more," says Percey.
The small travel trailer was abandoned. Investigators say there is evidence leading them to believe the fire was intentionally set.
"Occupants in the area stated they saw some teens fleeing from the residence. Then arrived to find smoke coming from the trailer," says Chief Aldridge.
"It was on fire, it was the right thing to do, try to get it out. Instead of sit there and get marshmallows out and watch it burn," says Yeary.
And while fighting the fire might have been the right thing to do, Percey and Yeary say it was also the neighborly thing to do.
"Just neighbors watching out for neighbors, that's all we can do,"says Yeary.
Investigators have not made an arrest.
