Retired Firefighters Picket in Support of Increased Manpower

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

Several retired Beaumont firefighters picketed at Beaumont City Hall, aimed at seeking support for 4-man teams on fire trucks, something they believe would have had an impact on Monday's fire that injured six firefighters.

Beaumont Firefighters Association President Galen Key was in Galveston with the families of two injured firefighters and didn't take part in the demonstration.

Firefighters have been pushing for trucks staffed by 4 men, and they've raised the issue in contract talks with the city.

City Manager Kyle Hayes, Mayor Becky Ames and council members have said they support four-man teams on fire trucks, and during the resumption of contract talks last Friday, the city proposed changes in firefighters' schedules to help accomplish that.

District Chief Jeff McNeel has told KFDM News it's unclear if 4-man teams on fire trucks would have had an impact on Monday's fire.

He says in general, 4-man teams are safer, but he can't say they would have prevented the injuries that occurred Monday.
