Man arrested for explicit text messages to 12-year-old girl
Comments 0 | Recommend 0JASPER COUNTY - by Steve Stewart/KJAS - In a case eerily similar to NBC's Predator series, Jasper County deputies have arrested a 24-year-old man who is accused of sending sexually explicit cell phone text messages and photos to a 12 year-old-girl in the south end of the county.
According to Chief Deputy Ralph Nichols, an investigation recently began after the child's mother discovered the messages on the girl's cell phone and contacted the Sheriff's Department.
According to Nichols, the photos showed the man's genitalia and full-frontal nudity.
Nichols said the child assisted investigators by sending text messages to the suspect, who has been identified as Richard Simmons of Newton. Nichols said the girl set up a meeting with Simmons at Evadale High School.
Nichols said when Simmons arrived at the school and discovered deputies were there waiting for him, he took off running and was apprehended after a short chase.
Simmons appeared before Precinct 6 Justice of the Peace Steve Connor on Thursday morning and was officially charged with online solicitation. Bond was set at $500,000.00 and Simmons remains in the Jasper County Jail.
