Beaumont trainer who served at Ford Hood expresses anger at shootings
Thursday afternoon Mark Owens received a text that there'd been a shooting at Fort Hood. The World Gym trainer turned on the TV and could not believe what he was seeing.
"At this moment I still don't understand," said Owens. "There is a million other things he could have done if he didn't want to leave. It was totally unnecessary."
Owens served four years in the Army before he began his career as a trainer. During two of those years he was stationed at Fort Hood. He's been to the processing center and the movie theater where dozens of people were shot.
Owens says at the time of the shootings it's likely both buildings were being used to process soldiers for deployment to Iraq or Afganistan.
Owens says when soldiers get ready to serve overseas it's an emotional time.
"The family is already sad, everybody is sad because they are about to go overseas and they don't know if they are coming back and for something like this to happen, it is crazy."
Owens calls the Army a family, a brotherhood. He could never imagine a soldier turning his gun on another soldier.
"Especially someone in that position, a major is supposed to be in a leadership role."
He says soldiers are strong and together they will get through what happened.
"My heart goes out to them and my prayers. All I can do is pray for them."
