Archbishop recommends: Catholic Parishes on Galveston, Bolivar consolidate to one
The Archbishop of the Diocese of Galveston Houston, Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, has recommended a restructuring of the parishes on Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula.
Teams representing the parishes met earlier this week and the Cardinal made his recommendation to consolidate 5 parishes into one.
Before Hurricane Ike, there were 5 parishes and about 3,000 registered households on Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula.
The Cardinal believes a single parish will best serve the needs of the local Catholic community and best utilize the available resources.
Last month we spoke with parishioners who wanted to reopen Our Mother of Mercy in Port Bolivar.
And just last week the second Catholic Church on the peninsula, Saint Terese in Crystal Beach, was torn down.
The Diocese is unsure of the fate of 7 churches that survived the storm, including Our Mother of Mercy.
