Indoor Gun Range Instructor Reacts To Supreme Court Ruling
Comments 0 | Recommend 0People at an indoor gun range in Hardin County are reacting to a historic Supreme Court decision that supports the right of Americans to keep guns in their homes for self-defense.
The U.S. Supreme Court decision marks the first time the justices have ruled on the 2nd Amendment since it was ratified in 1791.
The ruling struck down the District of Columbia's ban on handguns.
The owner and customers at the Lone Star Indoor Gun Range off Highway 69 in Lumberton have been following the court case.
The gun range, among other things, offers instruction to people who want to apply for a concealed handgun license in Texas.
Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia said the handgun is Americans' preferred weapon of self-defense because, in his words, "it can be pointed at a burglar with one hand while the other hand dials police."
One instructor at the indoor gun range told us why he supports the ruling.
"I think it was the right decision," said Chris Parks, a concealed handgun license instructor. "It's a right that the Constitution gives us, and until you demonstrate that you don't deserve to have that right, I think no one should be able to take it away from you."
Parks told us sufficient safeguards exist to try to prevent guns from getting into the hands of people who shouldn't have them.
"The laws are set up to keep people that shouldn't have them from having them," said Parks. "If they were to take them out of the hands of people that should have them, then the criminals would be the only ones that have the guns."
