Comments 0 | Recommend 0BEAUMONT - From Lamar University - A new scholarship has been established in honor of the late Helen and Blakey Locke, both longtime fixtures in the Beaumont community. The Helen and Blakey Locke Regents Memorial Scholarship in Communication was established to honor the couple’s passion for the media arts and provide funds for communication majors to pursue their dreams.
The Department of Communication thanks the donors for this wonderful gift in recognition of Helen and Blakey Locke,” said Mary Evelyn Collins, chair of Lamar’s department of communication. “This scholarship will assist worthy students in funding their education in communication.”
Born in Weatherford, Texas, Helen Locke moved to Beaumont in 1941 to pursue a career in broadcasting. She worked for KFDM radio and KFDM television from 1955 until 1963. Helen served as president of the Texas State Chapter of American Women in Radio and Television, chair of the administrative board of Trinity United Methodist Church, board member of Beaumont State Bank and president of the Pilot Club of Beaumont. Her other community involvements include the YMCA, Art Museum of Southeast Texas, Beaumont Music Commission, Symphony of Southeast Texas and Daughters of the American Revolution.
A Kentucky native, Blakey Locke moved to Beaumont in 1938 when he and his business partner purchased KFDM radio. After KFDM television was formed in 1955, Blakey served as its president and general manager. He also served his community as past president of the Kiwanis Club, director of the Beaumont Chamber of Commerce, board member of Beaumont State Bank and member of the Rotary Club of Beaumont, Beaumont Country Club and Trinity United Methodist Church.
The couple remained devoted to their family, community and Lamar University until their deaths.
