Major Changes Coming To Federal Prison In Beaumont.
There are major changes coming to the federal prison in Beaumont.
KFDM News has learned the Bureau of Prisons is planning to transfer all of the high security inmates to other locations across the country.
Spokesperson Sheria Hill told KFDM, the high security inmates will be replaced by medium security prisoners.
Hill said the move is to enhance the agency's ability to run safe, secure, and humane institutions and to provide inmates with appropriate self-improvement opportunities.
Officials with the union that represents federal correctional officers say since the prison opened in 1997 there have been numerous violent attacks on officers as well as inmates attacking each other.
There are more than 1,300 high security inmates housed in the Beaumont prison, and the process of moving them could begin in next couple of months.
Union leader Isaac Ortiz told KFDM Wednesday afternoon that correctional officers have received very little information about the changes and are concerned about how the decision may affect their jobs.
Ortiz says about 200 employees. The majority of them correctional officers could be impacted by the change.
In addition to the high security prison, the complex also has three other facilities that house about 4,000 medium and low security inmates according to the Bureau's website.
