Oct. 10 Leger's Restaurant Report Card

This week's Restaurant Report Card comes to us from the Beaumont Health Department.

Inspectors say at least 95 percent of the city's restaurants have now reopened following Hurricane Ike.

Ssanitarians also say most inspection scores are higher since the storm because freezers were cleaned out and restaurants were cleaned following the hurricane.

CARMELAS MEXICAN RESTAURANT 3925 CALDER/GRADE=81

We begin with Carmela's Mexican Restaurant on Calder. Inspector Scott found pans of meat left out at room temperature, there was a cook without a hair restraint and employees were cutting unwashed vegetables which could cross contaminate other foods. Carmela's on Calder gets an 81.

MARKET BASKET 8350 PHELAN/GRADE=83

Inspector Scott checked out Market Basket on Phelan. Inspector Scott found several flies and gnats by the hand sink in the seafood area.. They were thawing food at room temperature which could cause it to spoil... It should be thawing in the refrigerator or under running water. There was also a rack blocking the handsink. Market Basket gets an 83.

SIZZLIN SEAFOOD 3670 E. LUCAS/GRADE=85

Next inspector Scott dropped by Sizzlin Seafood on East Lucas. The inspector found eggs and chicken left out of the refrigerator.. Employees were not thawing food properly. The restaurant had fish and shrimp in the freezer from a quote 'friend' which is not an approved source of food. Sizzlin Seafood gets an 85.

BLACK EYED PEA 6455 PHELAN BLVD/GRADE=88

Inspector Wilhelm visited the Black Eyed Pea on Phelan Boulevard. The inspector found cheese at an unsafe temperature and the cooler for chicken was not at the proper temperature. The Black Eyed Pea gets an 88.
