Salsa Dancing Festival To Heat Up Southeast Texas in July

A local dance studio will be holding the area's inaugural Salsa and Latin Dance festival in Beaumont.

City Dance Center will be hosting SoulsaFest 2009 on Saturday, July 11, 2009 that will feature workshops from professional Latin Dance instructors, performances from award winning dances troupes, and social dancing.

Workshops will begin at 11:00 am at City Dance Center, 3015 N. Dowlen Road, Ste. 270, in the HEB Shopping Center in Beaumont. Throughout the day, attendees will be able to participate in classes such as Beginner Samba, Beginner Salsa, Intermediate/Advance Salsa, and Hip Hop.

The workshops will be facilitated by award winning performers Eddy "Salsa Eddy" Deynes and Lucia Dargam, two of the most highly praised Latin dance instructors and choreographers in the state of Texas. Dargam has had the opportunity to travel across the United States performing and teaching Latin dance. Recently, Lucia had the opportunity to perform as a featured dancer on the 2008 Latin Grammy Awards that was held in Houston in November 2008.

Deynes is one of the most influential contributors and promoters of the Salsa culture in the Greater Houston Metropolitan area and the state of Texas. Eddy is the owner of the Houston Dance Factory and teaches salsa at a number of other dance studios and night clubs in the Houston area. He is also the director of a number of professional Latin dance performance groups such as S.W.AT., and Las Tribus De Las Salsa that have performed across the country. "Salsa Eddy" has had the opportunity to teach and perform in countries such as Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Japan.

In January, Dargam and Deynes, who qualified for the 2009 World Salsa Championship, facilitated a Salsa workshop at City Dance Center. Deynes is looking forward to SoulsaFest 2009 and to coming back to Beaumont.

"I'm very excited. I want to thank City Dance Center for inviting Lucia and I once again to this beautiful town. I hope that everyone has an unforgettable time at SoulsaFest 2009. We hope that this will be a vehicle to motivate and build the salsa community in Beaumont." Deynes says.

At 8:00 pm, SoulsaFest 2009 will move to Suga's Deep South Cuisine and Jazz Bar, 461 Bowie St in Beaumont, for a night of social dancing and performances. Schedule to perform at SoulsaFest 2009 are the second place winners of the Texas Salsa Classic 2009, Gabriel Yamal & Deneise Pozzele and the fourth place winners Ana Espino and Daimon Garcia. Latin Dance group LD Company, Houston based S.W.A.T. Dance Company, and Southeast Texas's own Soulsa II Dance Company are also scheduled to perform.

City Dance Center owner and SoulsaFest 2009 promoter Jacey Garcia is excited about the festival and increasing the awareness of Salsa and Latin Dance in Southeast Texas.

"Salsa in Beaumont is gaining momentum and has really come a long way in the past few years. This year's SoulsaFest is only the beginning of what is to come. My goal is to keep expanding SoulsaFest so that it becomes a weekend long event held yearly." Garcia says.
