Man says vicious dogs killed his pet rabbits

PINE FOREST - An Orange County man who says he lost two pet rabbits to vicious dogs wants police to enforce leash laws.

The man, a Pine Forest resident, said he has called Orange County Animal Control for help, but nothing has happened.

Morris Bonnette said he's afraid the rest of his animals and his granddaughter are in danger.

Bonnette said he heard loud noises coming from outside, went to check it out and saw three large brown dogs, two of them wearing red collars.

He fired his shotgun to scare the dogs away. Once they ran off, he found they had killed two of his rabbits and chewed off the toes of a third one.

Bonnette said he called the Orange County livestock officer and the response he got was of no help to him.

"He said ‘if you can find the owner of the dog I will go to him,’” recalled Bonnette.

“I felt like that's not my duty,” Bonnette said. That's … why he's getting paid."

Pine Forest Police Department Marshal James Blankenship said homeowners need to file complaints with the department before officers can start an investigation.

Blankenship said there's a huge problem with unrestrained dogs roaming the community. He's asking residents to secure animals behind a fence or with a leash.
