Horse falls on student during high school rodeo
JASPER COUNTY - by Steve Stewart/KJAS - A Jasper High School student is hospitalized in Nacogdoches after her horse fell on top of her during the Region V High School Rodeo at the Nacogdoches Expo Center on Sunday evening.
Region V is well known as the most competetive area in the state in high school rodeo.
According to the girl's aunt, Mella Newman, 14-year-old Lacy Hollis was going around the first barrel when her horse slipped and went down on top of her. Mella suffered a severely broken arm near the elbow, and she is scheduled for surgery at the Nacogdoches Medical Center on Monday afternoon.
Following the accident, Newman said rescue workers and other rodeo contestants assisted the girl, and the parents of the other contestants helped to bring Lacy's horse back to Jasper.
Lacy, who is a freshman at JHS, is the daughter of Jasper's Mike and Prissy Hollis, and the granddaughter of Sheriff Mitchel Newman, and his wife, County Clerk Debbie Newman.
