Justice served?

The daughter of 75 year old Lois Deckert tells KFDM News she learned only recently that prosecutors had resolved the case more than one month ago.

Deckert was killed in a head-on collision in Hardin County.

Her daughter says the suspect was charged with intoxication manslaughter but received probation on lesser charges.

Jeanette Selby is making a trip down Highway 105 to the last place anyone saw her mother alive.

"Happened on this bridge right here, mother couldn't go anywhere," says Selby.

In May of 2007, Lois Deckert was driving her three great-grandchildren from Batson to the West Hardin School. A woman driving in the opposite direction hit the 75 year old head on.

"Colby, the youngest, was in the hospital in Galveston for 3 weeks with a broken jaw. Of course the 2 boys had to climb out over mother and were horrified," says Selby.

Selby says the accident killed Deckert instantly. And the woman investigators say was at fault was charged with intoxication manslaughter. Selby says the woman had been using pain killers when she slammed into the family's car.

But Selby can't understand why the charge was dropped for a lesser charge of drug possession, and why it took more than a month before the family learned about the outcome of the case.

"Every time call can't get anyone at the DA's office. For a while, no one answered. Then got an answering machine all of a sudden and I started leaving messages," says Selby.

Messages Selby says were not answered, leaving her with only more questions.

"Why were we not contacted? Why didn't we have a say? Why did they let this girl off, drop charges for someone who killed my mother?" asks Selby.

A mother she remembers baking in the kitchen, helping others with a smile and loving her family.

"I don't wish anything bad on her, just want justice done. I just want people to know when stuff like this happens, justice needs to be served," says Selby.

While Selby and her family aren't sure justice has been served, they'll look to God for answers.

KFDM News made several attempts at contacting the District Attorney's office.
