Breaking News: Giant Sinkhole Opens in Liberty County
Crews are monitoring a giant sinkhole, reportedly as deep as 100 feet and at least two football fields across, that swallowed a storage tank, truck and power lines off FM 770 in the Liberty County town of Daisetta.
There are no homes in the immediate area and no one has been hurt.
The sinkhole opened Wednesday morning in an area where salt domes are located, near a storage facility off Highway 770 about 5 miles north of Raywood.
The caverns have been used to store salt brine pumped from oil fields.
A tank filled with brine fell into the sinkhole, as did a truck, construction equipment and power lines. Other power lines in the area are leaning precariously near the sinkhole.
The Liberty County Sheriff's Office has closed part of FM 770 near the sinkhole. The Hull-Daisetta Volunteer Fire Department is also at the scene, along with officials from the Texas Railroad Commission.
