One car left for Jasper dealer
Comments 0 | Recommend 0A family business 70 years in the making will soon close its doors.
Kinnear motors found out in June it would be one of the GM dealerships shutting down after the auto maker went bankrupt and cut franchises.
Three generations have run the business, and now there is only one car left.
"The business has changed," says Kinnear Motors owner, Mike Kinnear.
The business has changed for Mike Kinnear.
"I started, actually, I used to ride my bike down here when I was 10 or 11, in everybody's way," says Kinnear.
He's not in anyone's way. There are no salesmen in the office, and the only cars left in the showroom at his Jasper auto dealership are on paper.
His grandfather opened the doors to Kinnear Motors in 1939, Mike is the third generation owner.
"It's strange to come down here and not see cars and not see signs. It's kind of, real strange," says Kinnear.
But he's not done just yet.
There's one more car that needs to be sold before he closes the doors. A 2008 Buick Lucerne.
"I thought it would be the first one to sell. Good color, good equipment, good quality car," says Kinnear.
A quality car, from a quality dealer.
"It's kind of a sad deal, people been in the car business for a long time, all of a sudden they're not anymore. It's not their fault," says Kinnear.
When Buick cut franchises last summer, Kinnear Motors was on the list. Twelve employees lost their jobs, eight cars had to be sold, and now "The sound I'll miss the most .. Is the air wrench. That noise," says Kinnear.
Whatever memory he'll miss most from the shop, to the showroom, he's still in business until the last car is off the lot.
"I run into people on the street, tell me it just doesn't look right. It doesn't, but that's the way it is," says Kinnear.
The way it is for this dealer, who has to find another job after 30 years selling cars.
"I've never been without a job, so I don't know," says Kinnear.
And serving customers in Southeast Texas.
Kinnear says the reason he decided not to market another brand of vehicle is because most companies aren't opening new franchises.
He says he's not exactly sure what he'll do after they close.
