Texas Headlines

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine urged Democratic National Committee members in Austin today to push for passage of federal health care insurance legislation, saying that inaction and delay aren't options. The DNC chairman is in the state's capital for the Democrats' three-day fall meeting.

HOUSTON (AP) - Prison officials have recommended firing a death-row chaplain who acknowledged helping a condemned inmate smuggle out letters. Some of the inmate's letters were posted online and threatened a state senator and his family. A Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokeswoman says it's not known if the letters chaplain Richard Anderson mailed for the prisoner are the ones that ended up on the Web.

TYLER, Texas (AP) - A man and woman have been arrested for allegedly plotting to abduct a newborn child in Tyler. A police statement says Ashley Harris ingratiated herself with the newborn's mother at a Tyler hospital, and later got directions to the woman's home. Casey Bradford barged in, saying he was a case worker and was removing the child. Police say he left when he realized the mother's relatives were en route.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Former "first daughter" Jenna Bush Hager will make her debut next week as a correspondent for NBC's "Today" show. The show is set for Sept. 18 and will originate from Arlington as NBC promotes its "Football Night in America" telecast of the Dallas Cowboys' Sept. 19 home opener against the New York Giants.
