Police concerned about well-being of baby used as cover in thefts

It's a crime most any parent would find difficult to understand.

Beaumont Police say a man and woman are not only stealing from businesses at the mall and elsewhere, they are using a baby to distract people from what they are doing.

Investigators have the video to prove it.

Business managers and police believe the thieves will continue stealing from stores and have no intention of stopping.

The Beaumont Police Department is asking for help in identifying the couple.

Surveillance video shows the couple inside the Radio Shack at Parkdale Mall on November 23rd.

You can see the man push the stroller with a baby in it through the aisle.  Then he stops, and begins taking items off the shelf.

Police say the pair used the stroller to store the stolen goods.

And they say the man threatened a worker at Sunglass Hut in the mall, telling the employee he would sue the company if they searched his bags when a worker became suspicious of the two.

In November, police say they stole items from HEB on Dowlen Road, Sunglass Hut twice and Radio Shack inside the mall.

Now they're seeking help identifying them to press charges, and to check on the well-being of the baby.

"Why would you involve a child if you're going to commit a crime?  That speaks volumes about who they are and committing a crime is bad enough.  But involving a young child that doesn't have a choice is absolutely despicable," says Officer Randy Stevens with the Beaumont Police Department.

The man was last seen wearing an orange shirt.  He has dark hair, a goatee and moustache.  The woman was wearing a black shirt and has glasses.

If you have any information on this crime, call the Beaumont Crime Stoppers at 833-TIPS.
