Toddler's Mother Says Indictments Another Step on Road to Justice
Comments 0 | Recommend 0The Jasper County grand jury has indicted the father and stepmother of a toddler for capital murder in his death.
The indictments allege 21 year old Crystal Desormeaux and 27 year old Leo Desormeaux IV caused the toddler's death on December 9th at the couple's home in Evadale.
According to the indictments, they caused the death of 21 month old Triston Dobbins by choking him, shaking him, and striking his head with or against an object.
Triston's mother waited at the Jasper County Courthouse so she could get first hand news of the indictments.
"It was slow, it took a lot," says Trison Dobbin's mother, Ami Claybrook.
It took a lot for Ami Claybrook and her family to wait outside the Jasper County Courthouse for the grand jury to return indictments.
"We sat out here with one investigator and told stories about Triston," says Claybrook.
Claybrook shared happy memories about her son Triston, but they still brought tears to her eyes.
"I think it gives us a little more, it takes a little more weight off to make us feel a little better," says Claybrook.
Claybrook says each step in the legal process does that. Today's step means a grand jury believes there is probable cause for Triston's stepmother and father to go to trial on capital murder charges.
The Sheriff has said Triston's father gave investigators information that led to Crystal's arrest in February for capital murder.
"It's a good day, it's not great, it's never going to be great," says Claybrook.
Claybrook is trying to move on with her life.
"I got married March 31st. I was aiming for Triston's birthday, but he couldn't get off in time," says Claybrook.
She says it's a way to remember Triston, while she waits for the trial.
"I think we'll feel more relieved when it's all done and we can put everything to rest," says Claybrook.
Triston would have turned two at the end of March.
The District Attorney's Office wants the case to go to trial by the end of the year.
