Jurors admit betting on when trial would end

Comments 0

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Two jurors in the 1995 trial of a man accused in the ambush slaying of a Baton Rouge police officer have testified that jurors wagered on when Henri Broadway's capital murder trial would end.

The foreman, Frank Brumley, testified Wednesday about taking part in a betting pool, but insisted it had no impact on the jury's Nov. 2, 1995, decision to convict Broadway of first-degree murder and recommend he be put to death.

The 39-year-old Broadway is seeking a new trial.

In addition to the wagering claim, Broadway's attorneys contend his trial lawyers were ineffective at both phases of the trial and that prosecutors withheld evidence that could have proved his innocence.

The Advocate reports state Judge Mike Erwin did not indicate when he would rule on the betting allegation.
