Family friend backs over and kills two year old

     GROVES- A two year old boy from Nederland was run over and killed by a family friend who was backing out of the driveway, that's according to police. Officers were called to the 100 block of Nederland Avenue at 11:40 Saturday morning.

     Jessica Holloway reports, neighbors are concerned about the family.

　   Like any typical Saturday Jason Winfree and his son play football in the front yard. They live on a street with lots of traffic. The kids were playing outside just minutes before they heard screaming and crying coming from down the road.

     "No, uh, huh I couldn't believe it," said Jason Winfree.

     Nederland Police responded to this home located at 151 Nederland Avenue. Officers say a 23 year old family friend backed a Ford Expedition out of the driveway, hitting a two year old boy.

     "We tried to come down here and see. when we found out it was a baby we just prayed. That could've been our son. Scary," said Winfree.

     Nederland Avenue is a busy road. Neighbors say they try to keep their kids safe but what happened here was just an accident. Something that could happen anywhere.

     Police say the child was behind the car and the driver just couldn't see him. Just about anyone would agree what happened on a Saturday morning was tragic.

     "It's just awful what happened here," said Winfree.

     The two year old was taken to Southeast Texas Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Officers say they're waiting to release information until they contact all the family and complete their investigation.
