Tires slashed in senior living center parking lot
BEAUMONT- by Haley Bull
Tire after tire in The Crossing parking lot off East Lucas Drive was flat after Beaumont Police said a man slashed the tires on 19 vehicles early Sunday morning.
Officers said they got the call about 4:30 a.m. to the senior living apartment complex and found the 35-year old from Beaumont sitting on a bus stop with a knife. Police said they retrieved it and the man directed them to the vehicles. Officers arrested him and took him to the Jefferson County Jail.
The man is charged with criminal mischief and public intoxication, both misdemeanor charges. Officers said they placed a mental hold on him and that he will be evaluated Monday.
Sunday afternoon, some residents worked on changing their tires and figuring out how to pay for new ones.
"I live on social security and I think that most people that live here do, a lot of them anyway, so we have to budget for things like tires," Laurine Dowell, a resident, said.
The senior living center is part of public housing.
"They don't have the money to buy new tires," Lionel Johnson, a resident and neighborhood watchman, said. "They really don't deserve this at all, they're too good of people to have this happen to them."
One resident said even though his tire was no good, he's still got it better than others.
"I just asked myself well how many tires? They said it was one. I said to myself I'm blessed," Alvin Prosper, a resident, said.
Some vehicles had two tires slashed.
"It's a shame for something like this to happen 'cuz nothing like this has ever happened here before," Johnson said.
Some in the gated community of seniors are now left figuring out how to get from one place to the next.
