BEAUMONT - Only a little more than half of the freshmen high school students in BISD met the standard for the end-of-course writing portion of the STAAR test, according to preliminary results released Friday by BISD.
The district recently learned that of the 1,301 freshmen tested by the English 1 end-of-course (EOC) writing exam, only 52 percent met the standard. Results show 60 percent of students met the standard on the reading test.

BEAUMONT - From BISD - The new State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) end-of-course writing exam has proved to be a challenge for ninth-grade students across the state. Beaumont ISD students are no exception to that trend as BISD students showed lower than expected stores on the writing component of STAAR.
The district recently learned that of the 1,301 freshmen tested by the English 1 end-of-course (EOC) writing exam, only 52 percent met the standard. Results show 60 percent of students met the standard on the reading test.
Little comparison to districts with similar demographics is available at this time because statewide numbers have not been released from the Texas Education Agency. The reading and writing tests are only two of the 15 exams students in the class of 2015 and beyond will be required to pass before graduating from high school.
BISD students performed well on other subjects of the STAAR exam with 75 percent meeting the standard in Algebra I and 96 percent meeting the standard in Geometry. BISD students scored very well in the Biology with 86 percent meeting the standard.
Eighty percent of BISD students met the standard in World History while 74 percent met the standard in Word Geography.
"These preliminary scores are giving mixed messages. Ninth-grade students typically don't take a state writing assessment. However, these preliminary scores show a need for districts throughout the state to focus on the reading and writing components as they are consistently the lowest two areas in the data we've seen," said Dr. Dwaine Augustine, assistant superintendent for research and evaluation. "The state has moved to increase rigor in the classrooms and measure that on these standardized tests."
Tenth and 11th grade BISD students performed exceptionally well on the 2012 TAKS exams. Tenth grade students scored a 95 percent passing rate in social studies, a 90 percent passing rate in English/Language Arts (ELA), a 78 percent passing rate in math, and a 76 percent passing rate in science.
Students in the 11th grade posted a 99 percent passing rate in social studies, a 96 percent passing rate in science, and a 94 percent passing rate in both ELA and Math.
