New Black Panthers rally for man accused in death of Alfred Wright
BEAUMONT-By Jennifer Gordy
(Chanting) "Justice for Alfred Wright. Free Shane Hadnot. Justice for Shane Hadnot. This is a conspiracy to cover up the truth."
The New Black Banthers joined pastors and the family of Shane Hadnot. Hadnot is charged with distributing drugs that resulted in the November death of Alfred Wright who also lived in Jasper. But, family members say it's a cover up. Hadnot's cousin, Shameka Lee, says, "I believe Sheriff Maddox and them know something about it whether they did it whether he had any doings with it.. They still know something.
The National Chair of the New Black Panther Party, Krystal Muhammad, also believes there was a cover up by law enforcement. Muhammad says, "The reason Alfred's tongue was cut out his eyes was taken out and his ears was cut off not only the signs of a lynching, was to put out a message to keep his mouth shut, but also to quit messin' with white women in the area.
Executive Assistant U. S. Attorney Brit Featherston says every stone was turned in the investigation into the death of Alfred Wright. "The evidence that involved in the case is described in the indictment, we have been able to validate and verify any other allegations of other methods of death of Alfred Wright. We were unable to verify and we looked."
Featherston says the connection between Hadnot and Wright is clear, including a text message from wright requesting to purchase cocaine five hours before he went missing. Featherston says, "The evidence supports the distribution of narcotics by Mr. Hadnot caused by Mr. Wright taking those drugs caused the death of Alfred Wright."
Hadnot's mother says she doesn't believe her son caused Wright's death. Sharon Hadnot says, "He guilty for selling drugs he knows he was wrong for that anybody sells drugs they know its wrong. He know he was wrong for that he could take his punishment for that, but we not gonna let him go to the penitentiary for murder and he didn't do it."
While Hadnot is not facing a murder charge, he is facing a rarely used federal charge of distribution of a controlled substance resulting in death.
